How to clean persistent cat urine odor from a rug?
About a month ago, a neighborhood cat got into our house and "tagged" the living room carpet. Since then we’ve tried cleaning it with carpet cleaner, various cleansers, sprayed it with Fabreze (which has worked well with our own cat and dog accidents) and even had it professionally cleaned. But the smell persists, and it’s especially bothersome now as we’re trying to sell our house. Any solutions that have worked for you? Thanks.

Well, your cat is probably neutered and their cat is not. Non-neutered cat urine is much stronger.
You need a pet specific carpet cleaner. For strong smells, you have to let it set for a while.
Try ‘A Simple Solution’ or ‘Nature’s Miracle’, it will actually break down the enzymes in the urine.
Febreeze masks odors, it does not remove them. Having now used the other cleaners, I don’t know if the ‘Simple Solution’ will work after all those other chemicals. After you use it, you may have to borrow a carpet steamer or rent one and have it cleaned again.
I am also linking you to a list of several other things to try.
Personally, I’ve had good luck with Nature’s Miracle and Simple Solution.

Try an ozone generator. But if you have to buy one, you’d be better off just ripping out the carpet and redoing it.
You might be able to rent one from your local fire restoration company. Ozone, effectively accelerates ( and simulates years of "air-ing out").
Downside is even if you can find one, you won’t be able to be in that part of the house while its running, and you’d need it running for several days.
this works like a charm-pour some or all of a bottle of peroxide on the spot, then pour some pet fresh carpet cleaner over it.let the goop dry for a few hours, scrape off the pet fresh, and the urine smell will be gone.peroxide breaks down the odor molecules in cat pee.it worked perfectly when my cat had an accident.the peroxide may discolor the carpet,or it may not.its a gamble, but i would rather go with the possibility of discoloration than with the smell of cat urine.good luck! it did not cause any discoloration in our case.
Febreze seems to only masks my cat’s smell to me. I use a product called What Odor? that works great!! it actually ELIMINATES odor’s. I would definately tell you to try What Odor?
